Virtual technology is the process of creating a digital copy of a physical device or event, such as a trade show or a virtual game. The term”virtual” is used to differentiate it from the real thing, however, the replica is as real as the original object. Virtual machines (VM) are software-based emulators of physical hardware, for instance a server or desktop computer. They don’t need to be physically removed from the premises and can be accessed in the same way as physical equipment is in other locations.

The advent of VR has created new opportunities for tourism development, and also opened an era of research on the experience economy. However, VR research has not been fully integrated into the more general literature on tourism. This article will attempt to fill this gap by reviewing the literature on VR/AR/MR to aid in tourism and hospitality.

Utilizing the SCOPUS database, 80 studies from the SCOPUS database were selected, and their characteristics and trends were analyzed. It is clear that since the year 2018, the volume of VR/AR/MR research papers in higher education has grown rapidly, mainly because the related devices are becoming more affordable. It is also apparent that the VR/AR/MR applications are predominantly targeted at undergraduates with engineering, science and medicine-related majors as main research objects. Research on humanities and social sciences topics like art and history is comparatively scarce.

VR/AR/MR is a great way to improve students’ knowledge, skills and confidence in learning. It can be used to enhance the medical education of students and increase compassion for patients. Immersive VR, as an example can aid medical students develop an understanding for elderly patients suffering from the effects of aging and also give them the chance to evaluate patients suffering from dyspnea.
